Samyak Darśan (Right Vision / Right Faith) is the first genuine awakening of the soul toward truth.
It is:
- correct perception of reality,
- faith in soul, karma, liberation, and truth,
- and the beginning of freedom from delusion.
It is not merely intellectual belief.
It is an inner existential shift.
Position in Gunsthan
Jain Philosophy
Before Samyak Darśan
| Guṇasthāna |
|---|
| 1. Gunsthan#1. Mithyātva (Wrong Belief) |
| 2. Gunsthan#2. Sāsādana (Falling from Right Faith) |
| 3. Gunsthan#3. Miśra (Mixed State) |
| These stages lack stable right vision. |
Samyak Darśan Begins at Gunsthan#4. Avirata Samyag-dṛṣṭi (Right Vision Without Discipline)
- Right vision arises
- Truth becomes internally clear
- But conduct is still not fully disciplined
This is the true spiritual turning point.
How Higher Guṇasthānas Develop
| Stages | Development |
|---|---|
| 4–5 | Right faith stabilizes |
| 6–7 | Discipline and vigilance mature |
| 8–10 | Passions become deeply purified |
| 11–12 | Delusion nearly/completely destroyed |
| 13–14 | Omniscience and liberation |
Thus:
Guṇasthānas are the progressive refinement of Samyak Darśan, knowledge, and conduct.
Three Main Types of Samyak Darśan
1. Upshamik Samyak Darśan
Right faith arises through temporary suppression of deluding karma.
Nature
- Delusion still exists underneath
- Spiritual clarity is temporary
- Fall back is possible
Analogy
Clouds temporarily move away from the sun.
Relation to Guṇasthāna
- Often associated with early emergence of right faith
- Can occur around the 4th stage
- Spiritually unstable
2. Kshayopshamik Samyak Darśan
Right faith arises through:
- partial destruction,
- and partial suppression of delusion.
Nature
- More stable
- Most common type among progressing seekers
- Core worldview changes permanently
Analogy
Some clouds destroyed, remaining clouds temporarily cleared.
Relation to Guṇasthāna
- Supports sustained progress from 4th onward
- Common across many middle spiritual stages
3. Kshayik Samyak Darśan
Meaning
Right faith arises through complete destruction of faith-deluding karma.
Nature
- Irreversible
- No return to wrong belief possible
- Extremely advanced state
Analogy
Clouds permanently disappear.
Relation to Guṇasthānas
- Associated with very advanced purification
- Especially near 12th stage and beyond

Final One-Line Insight
Samyak Darśan is the doorway to liberation, and the Guṇasthānas describe how that right vision gradually stabilizes, purifies, perfects, and finally culminates in omniscience and moksha.
